About

Jonathan Sayer is a British actor, playwright, and co-founder of Mischief Theatre who has appeared on Broadway in productions running from 2017 to 2023. Along with Henry Lewis and Henry Shields, Sayer established Mischief Theatre in 2008 while the three were enrolled in a drama foundation course at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

The company's first major work, The Play That Goes Wrong, was co-written by Sayer, Lewis, and Shields and had its premiere at The Old Red Lion in Islington in 2012. Sayer originated the role of Dennis Tyde in that production and reprised the character in the Broadway transfer. A year after the play's London debut, Mischief Theatre staged Peter Pan Goes Wrong at The Pleasance Theatre in 2013, with Sayer again in the cast playing a character named Dennis. That production also moved to Broadway, where Sayer performed in it during his verified Broadway run between 2017 and 2023.

Beyond those two productions, Sayer contributed to several additional Mischief Theatre works as both writer and performer. The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, another collaboration between Sayer, Lewis, and Shields, opened at the Criterion Theatre in 2016, with Sayer playing Warren Slax. Magic Goes Wrong, written by Sayer, Lewis, Shields, Penn, and Teller, premiered at the Quays Theatre in August 2019, where Sayer played Mikey and later toured in the role. The following month, Groan Ups opened at the Vaudeville Theatre as part of a planned year-long residency that was ultimately shortened due to COVID-19 restrictions; Sayer appeared in that production as Simon.

Sayer's work with Mischief Theatre also extended to television. A BBC1 broadcast of Peter Pan Goes Wrong aired in 2016 with Sayer playing Dennis, and the following year BBC1 aired A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong, in which he again played the same character. BBC1 subsequently broadcast twelve episodes of The Goes Wrong Show between December 2019 and November 2021.
