Zona Maie Griswold

Zona Maie Griswold (December 19, 1889 – November 26, 1961) was an American soprano who appeared on Broadway in the 1924–1925 production of The Guardsman. Born in Mulhall, Oklahoma, she was raised in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of John Nelson Griswold, a railroad freight agent, and Florence Belle Young Griswold, a song composer.

Griswold received her vocal training at the New England Conservatory of Music and pursued additional study in Berlin. Her early performance career included a solo appearance at the Texas State Saengerfest in 1914, as well as engagements with the Grand Saline Band and the Apollo Chorus of Fort Worth.

Her professional life in New York encompassed a range of performance and religious music contexts. She served as soloist at Glen Ridge Congregational Church in New Jersey and sang regularly at churches and clubs throughout the region. During the 1920s she also performed frequently on radio. In 1924 she appeared on Broadway in The Guardsman, taking the role of an opera singer in the production. She additionally taught singing in New York during this period.

In 1916 Griswold married businessman Edward August Fimmen. The couple had two daughters, Zona Maie, born in 1917, and Florence Lilly, born in 1919. Edward died in 1947, leaving Griswold widowed. She died on November 26, 1961, at the age of 71, from Parkinson's disease, while residing with her daughter in Des Moines, Iowa. She was buried in Dallas, Texas.
