Zoey Francis Chaya Thompson Deutch was born on November 10, 1994, in Los Angeles, California, to actress Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch. She has one sister, Madelyn Deutch, who is also an actress. Her family includes her maternal grandmother, musician Barbara Barry Thompson, her paternal grandfather, music executive Murray Deutch, and her grand-uncle, actor Robert Walden. Her father, originally from New York, is of Jewish heritage, and her mother, from Minnesota, is of partial Irish ancestry. Deutch identifies as Jewish and had a bat mitzvah. She began taking acting classes at age five and later attended Oakwood School, Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where she majored in theater, and the Young Actors Space.

Deutch launched her professional acting career in 2010 at the age of fifteen, taking on the role of Maya, Zack Martin's love interest in the third season of Disney Channel's The Suite Life on Deck. She followed that with a recurring role as Juliet Martin in the CW thriller drama Ringer from 2011 to 2012. Her feature film debut came in Mayor Cupcake in 2011, in which she appeared alongside her mother and sister. She subsequently appeared in television series including NCIS, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, and ABC Family's Switched at Birth, before landing her first substantial big-screen supporting role in the 2013 fantasy romance Beautiful Creatures, opposite Emma Thompson, Thomas Mann, and Alden Ehrenreich.

Her first lead film role came in Vampire Academy in 2014, based on the young adult novel series by Richelle Mead, in which she played Rosemarie Hathaway. Deutch continued building her film career through a series of independent projects, playing Beverly in Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!!, which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2016. That same year she appeared in Dirty Grandpa alongside Robert De Niro and Zac Efron, and in Why Him? opposite James Franco, Bryan Cranston, and Megan Mullally. She also appeared in the crime drama Vincent-N-Roxxy, which premiered at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival alongside Emory Cohen, Emile Hirsch, and Zoë Kravitz.

In 2017, Deutch starred as Samantha Kingston in Before I Fall, an adaptation of Lauren Oliver's novel, and took the lead role in Flower, directed by Max Winkler, which premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. Also that year, she appeared in Danny Strong's Sundance Film Festival entry Rebel in the Rye, a biopic of J.D. Salinger in which she played Oona O'Neill opposite Nicholas Hoult, Kevin Spacey, and Laura Dern. She additionally appeared in The Year of Spectacular Men, directed by her mother Lea Thompson, in which she played Sabrina alongside her sister Madelyn and also shared a production credit. In 2017 she also appeared in James Franco's The Disaster Artist, based on the book by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell.

Deutch starred opposite Glen Powell in Netflix's romantic comedy Set It Up in 2018. The following year she headlined Tanya Wexler's crime comedy Buffaloed, playing con artist Peg Dahl, a role she also co-produced. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and received a limited theatrical release in February 2020. Also in 2019, she appeared in the comedy horror film Zombieland: Double Tap, which marked her first major box office success, and began starring in Ryan Murphy's Netflix comedy series The Politician alongside Ben Platt and Gwyneth Paltrow, which ran from 2019 to 2020. In 2022, she headlined the streaming projects Not Okay and Something from Tiffany's, and appeared in the thriller The Outfit. She also appeared in Ed Sheeran's music video for his song "Perfect" from the album ÷, released on November 9, 2017.

Deutch made her Broadway debut in 2024 in a revival of Thornton Wilder's drama Our Town. That same year she appeared in the thriller Juror No. 2. In 2025, she received critical recognition for her portrayal of Jean Seberg in Richard Linklater's biographical film Nouvelle Vague, earning a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Performance.
