About
Zella Russell, born Rosella O'Connor Russell on October 24, 1883, in the Worcester area of Massachusetts, was a vaudeville performer and Broadway actress whose career spanned from approximately 1912 to the late 1940s on the Columbia circuit, with Broadway appearances between 1920 and 1943.
Russell began her professional life as a pianist in silent movie theaters, including the Palace and the Dreamland, both located in the Boston area. She subsequently transitioned into vaudeville, joining Al Reeves's "Big Burlesque Review," where she performed both a piano act and light comedy routines. Her piano specialty consisted of arranging popular tunes of the era in a classical style, a skill that proved so well received that audiences frequently demanded she continue playing, effectively stopping the show. Newspaper profiles from that period credited her with study at the New England Conservatory of Music, though the institution's records do not confirm her attendance.
Her Broadway career encompassed four productions across more than two decades. She first appeared on Broadway in the musical The Sweetheart Shop, which ran from August 31 to October 16, 1920, playing the role of Daphne. She next appeared in the musical Springtime of Youth from October 26 to December 23, 1922, as Pepita, followed by The Love Song, in which she played Lizette during its run from January 13 to June 6, 1925. Russell returned to Broadway with two separate runs of the musical Blossom Time, portraying Mrs. Kranz in a December 1938 engagement and again in a September to October 1943 run.
Beyond the stage, Russell appeared in two films in 1936, Avenging Waters and Taming the Wild. She was married to Harry Kennedy Morton, himself a vaudevillian. The couple had one son, Harold Morton, Jr., who died in childhood. Russell died on February 1, 1952, in the Somerville, Massachusetts, area. Her husband survived her by four years, dying in May 1956.
