Zawe Ashton, born Zawedde Emma Muwanga-Ashton on 25 July 1984 in Hackney, London, is a British actress and playwright. The eldest of three children, she was born to a Ugandan mother, Victoria, and an English father, Paul Ashton. Her maternal grandfather, Paulo Muwanga, served as both President and Prime Minister of Uganda. Ashton began her formal training at the Anna Scher Theatre School at age six and later became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She earned a degree in acting from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Ashton's stage work spans several prominent London venues. Her theatre credits include Harold Pinter's Betrayal at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London, Rhinoceros, The Arsonists, and Gone Too Far! at the Royal Court, Othello and Frontline at the Globe Theatre, All the Little Things We Crushed at the Almeida, This Wide Night at the Soho Theatre, Michael Frayn's Here at the Rose Theatre Kingston, Abi Morgan's Splendour at the Donmar Warehouse, Jean Genet's The Maids at Trafalgar Studios, and the title role in Salome for Headlong Theatre and Hampstead Theatre. Her performance in Salome earned her second prize at the Ian Charleson Awards in June 2010. In 2019, she brought her role in Betrayal to Broadway, performing at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.

Her screen career encompasses film, television, and streaming. Film credits include Dreams of a Life, directed by Carol Morley, for which Ashton portrayed Joyce Carol Vincent and received a nomination in the Most Promising Newcomer category at the 2012 British Independent Film Awards; Velvet Buzzsaw, directed by Dan Gilroy for Netflix; St. Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold; Blitz; Nocturnal Animals, directed by Tom Ford; and Greta, directed by Neil Jordan. In 2023, she played the villain Dar-Benn in Marvel Studios' The Marvels. On television, Ashton is recognized for playing Vod in the Channel 4 comedy drama Fresh Meat and Katherine in Not Safe for Work, also for Channel 4. Additional television credits include Journey Blue in Doctor Who on the BBC, Claire in the BBC One and Netflix series Wanderlust, and two childhood appearances in The Demon Headmaster.

Ashton has received multiple industry honors. In November 2012, she won the Creative Diversity Network Award for Best Breakthrough On-Screen Talent for her work in Fresh Meat, and that same month received the Ultimate Newcomer trophy from Cosmopolitan magazine at their Women of the Year awards. In 2013, she won a Screen Nation Award for Female Performance in a Film for her lead role in Dreams of a Life.

As a writer, Ashton began competing in poetry slams at age 17 and won the London Poetry Slam Championship in 2000. In 2006, she served as Young Writer in Residence at the Contact Theatre in Manchester. Her first play, Harm's Way, was shortlisted for the Verity Bargate Award in 2007 and premiered at the Lowry in Salford in 2008 as part of the National Youth Theatre's new writing season. Subsequent plays include Skunk, performed by the National Youth Theatre and Soho Theatre; She from the Sea, presented at the London International Festival of Theatre in 2010; and For all the Women Who Thought They Were Mad, selected for the Royal Court Playwriting Festival in 2009. She also co-wrote Suddenlossofdignity.com for the Bush Futures Programme and contributed to The Children's Monologues, a piece adapted from stories by children in South Africa and presented by Dramatic Need in 2010. In 2019, Ashton published Character Breakdown, a fictionalized memoir drawn from her experiences as an actress. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in July 2021.

Beyond acting and writing, Ashton has narrated episodes of the Channel 4 documentary series 24 Hours in Police Custody and narrated the Channel 4 documentary Public Enemies: Jay-Z vs Kanye in 2017. That same year, she presented the third series of Random Acts, Channel 4's short-film showcase produced in association with Arts Council England, and directed and appeared in a film featured in the second episode of that series. Ashton is in a relationship with actor Tom Hiddleston, with whom she co-starred in the 2019 West End and Broadway productions of Betrayal. The couple have two children.
