About
Zamah Cunningham (November 29, 1892 – June 2, 1967) was an American actress whose career spanned stage, film, and television. Born in Portland, Oregon, she relocated with her family to Carthage, Missouri at the age of two. She began her professional life as a singer before moving to New York City to pursue formal acting training.
Before establishing herself on the stage, Cunningham secured a working contract with director D. W. Griffith, taking uncredited bit parts in his productions. Her film debut came in 1924 with Griffith's silent feature America. Following that work, she studied music in Paris and performed at the Opera Comique. Upon returning to the United States, she joined the Chicago Playhouse and participated in regional productions before eventually making her Broadway debut in 1933 with Give Us This Day.
Over the following decades, Cunningham appeared in more than twenty Broadway productions, including On the Town in 1944 and The Shadow of a Gunman in 1958. Her verified stage credits also include Reprise, The Trojan Women, Minor Miracle, In Clover, and The Season Changes, with her Broadway career extending from 1933 to 1965. Reflecting on her stage work in 1944, she noted that in the previous twenty years she had appeared in roughly fifty plays, characterizing most of them as flops.
Her film work continued alongside her stage career. She appeared in Dream Girl in 1948, Key to the City in 1950, and Here Come the Girls in 1953, with her final film role coming in Baby the Rain Must Fall in 1965. On television, she became recognizable to audiences beginning in 1956 through recurring guest appearances as Angelina Manciotti, a neighbor of the Kramdens on the sitcom The Honeymooners.
In her later years, Cunningham lived at the Park Royal Hotel on 23 West 73rd Street in Manhattan's Upper West Side. She suffered a stroke in her early seventies. Cunningham died at Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan on June 2, 1967, at the age of 74, and was interred at Avilla Cemetery in Avilla, Missouri.
