About
Yvonne Strahovski, born Yvonne Jaqueline Strzechowski on 30 July 1982 in Werrington Downs, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, is an Australian actress who has worked across theatre, television, film, and voice performance. She is the only child of Bożena, a lab technician, and Peter Strzechowski, an electronic engineer, both Polish emigrants from Tomaszów Mazowiecki. The family relocated to Bass Hill when Strahovski was five years old and later settled in the coastal suburb of Maroubra. She began acting lessons at age twelve and first performed on stage at school, playing Viola in a production of Twelfth Night. Following high school, she enrolled at the University of Western Sydney's Theatre Nepean, earning a Bachelor of Arts in performance in 2003. She then spent three years working professionally in Australian theatre before pursuing opportunities in the United States.
Early Australian screen credits include an appearance on the satirical series Double the Fist and the role of Freya Lewis in the drama series headLand, as well as a credit on Channel Nine's Sea Patrol. While in the United States auditioning for other projects, including NBC's 2007 series Bionic Woman, Strahovski submitted an audition tape for the spy comedy drama Chuck. She was cast as Sarah Walker after reading lines with co-star Zachary Levi and relocated to the United States six months later. At that time she adopted the stage name Strahovski, a more phonetic rendering of her birth surname Strzechowski. She is fluent in both English and Polish, and drew on that fluency in several episodes of Chuck. Strahovski portrayed Sarah Walker for the full run of the series, from 2007 to 2012.
Alongside her television work, Strahovski built a parallel career in video games and voice performance. She provided the voice and facial likeness of Miranda Lawson in Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, having her face scanned and animated for the role. She also voiced Aya Brea in the English version of The 3rd Birthday and Batwoman in the animated film Batman: Bad Blood (2016).
Her film credits include the 2011 action film Killer Elite, alongside Jason Statham, Clive Owen, and Robert De Niro, and the 2012 comedy The Guilt Trip, opposite Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand. Later film appearances include I, Frankenstein (2014), the film noir Manhattan Night (2016), in which she starred as Caroline Crowley alongside Adrien Brody, He's Out There (2018), The Predator (2018), and The Tomorrow War (2021).
In December 2012, Strahovski made her Broadway debut in a revival of Clifford Odets' Golden Boy, earning a Theatre World Award in 2013 for her performance. That same year, she was honored alongside Liam Hemsworth with the Australians in Film Breakthrough Award for work in international roles.
On television, Strahovski joined the cast of Dexter in its seventh season in 2012, portraying Hannah McKay, a woman connected to an investigation involving the death of a former lover who had been a spree killer. She reprised the role in the eighth season. In 2014, she joined the Fox event series 24: Live Another Day as CIA agent Kate Morgan, and was subsequently cast as Rene Carpenter in the ABC limited series The Astronaut Wives Club. She also starred in the limited series Stateless (2020) as Sofie Werner.
From 2017 to 2025, Strahovski starred as Serena Joy Waterford across all six seasons of the Hulu drama series The Handmaid's Tale. The role brought her nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, in 2018 and 2021, as well as three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations and a Golden Globe Award nomination.
In her personal life, Strahovski revealed at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2017 that she had married Tim Loden, her partner of six years. The couple have three sons, born in 2018, 2021, and 2023.
