About

Yvonne Mitchell, born Yvonne Frances Joseph on 7 July 1915 in London, England, was an English actress and author who built a distinguished career across theatre, film, and television over four decades. In 1946 she changed her name by deed poll to Yvonne Mitchell, dropping the middle name Frances. Her parents were Madge and Bertie Joseph, and her cousin was Conservative MP Keith Joseph. She was Jewish and received her education at Battle Abbey School in Sussex and St Paul's Girls' School in London.

Mitchell trained at the London Theatre Studio and made her professional acting debut in 1939. Her early career was rooted in the stage, and she went on to appear on Broadway in 1960 in The Wall. Her film work began in earnest with a speaking role in The Queen of Spades in 1949, though she had appeared in an uncredited minor part in Love on the Dole eight years prior. Over the following three decades she took on a number of prominent film roles, earning a British Film Award for The Divided Heart in 1954 and the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 7th Berlin International Film Festival for Woman in a Dressing Gown in 1957. She also appeared as Mildred in the film Sapphire in 1959.

Television brought Mitchell considerable recognition as well. The Daily Mail voted her Television Actress of the Year for 1953, largely on the strength of her portrayal of Cathy in the Nigel Kneale and Rudolph Cartier adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights. The following year she returned to work with the same creative team, playing Julia opposite Peter Cushing's Winston Smith in their adaptation of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four for the BBC. She later starred as Lea in the 1973 BBC television production of Colette's Cheri and continued appearing in guest roles through the late 1970s, including a part in the series Out of the Unknown in 1966. Her final screen role came in the BBC science-fiction series 1990 in 1977, after which she retired from acting.

Beyond performing, Mitchell was an established writer. She authored works for both children and adults, received recognition for her playwriting, and wrote a biography of the French writer Colette. Her own autobiography was published in 1957. Her plays include The Same Sky.

In her personal life, Mitchell was married to journalist, critic, and novelist Derek Monsey, and the couple lived in a village in the south of France. Mitchell died of cancer on 24 March 1979 at the age of 63. Monsey died the same year, approximately one month before her.
