About
Yvonne Constant (1930 – February 28, 2023) was a French actress, singer, and ballet dancer born in Paris, France, whose Broadway career spanned from 1958 to 1967.
Constant first came to Broadway as part of the cast of the revue La Plume de Ma Tante, a credit that earned her a Tony Award Special Award in 1959. She subsequently appeared in The Gay Life alongside Barbara Cook, a production for which she received a New York Drama Critics Citation recognizing her as one of the season's Most Promising Actresses. Richard Rodgers, having seen Constant perform on The Tonight Show — a program on which she appeared with Johnny Carson 45 times — cast her in a leading role in No Strings. Her Broadway work concluded with Come Live With Me, in which she played a French au pair.
Beyond the stage, Constant appeared in Disney's Monkeys, Go Home!, in which she starred opposite Maurice Chevalier, and in the television miniseries Sins, where she portrayed the chanteuse Annette alongside Joan Collins.
Constant also maintained an active cabaret career, performing in New York, elsewhere in the United States, and across Europe. In 2007 she sang "Ah Paris" at the City Center revival of Follies. Between 2008 and 2009 she appeared at the Metropolitan Room in New York on 14 occasions, in shows presented by Jan Wallman, directed and staged by choreographer Molly Molloy, with Russ Kassoff serving as her musical director. The French government named her Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres. Constant died on February 28, 2023, at the age of 92.
