About
Frank Wyndham Goldie was born on 5 July 1897 and died on 26 September 1957. An English actor, he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Marine Light Infantry during World War I, a commission he shared with his elder brother Maurice, who held rank in the same corps.
Goldie built his stage reputation at the Liverpool Playhouse, where he worked as an actor from 1927 through the summer of 1934, taking on directing responsibilities during his final year there. In 1937 he appeared in the West End in Margaret Kennedy's play Autumn. His stage career extended to Broadway, where he appeared in 1955 in the drama Tiger at the Gates.
His screen career spanned more than two decades and encompassed a wide range of character roles. Among his earlier film appearances, he portrayed Chief Judge Jeffries in the 1934 production Lorna Doone and played Cecil Rhodes in the 1937 historical film Victoria the Great. That same year he appeared in Under the Red Robe as Edmond, Duke of Fiox, and took roles in both The Last Chance and The Return of Carol Deane followed in 1938. His 1938 credits also included Arthur J. Balfour in Sixty Glorious Years, Commissioner Sanders in Old Bones of the River, and Francis Scott-Vaughan in The Return of Carol Deane. In 1939 he appeared in Inspector Hornleigh on Holiday and The Arsenal Stadium Mystery, and in 1940 in both Girl in the News and Night Train to Munich. Later film work included Seven Days to Noon in 1950, Doctor in the House in 1954, Child's Play in 1954, and The Secret in 1955. Brothers in Law followed in 1957, and his final screen role was Brigadier Cartwright in The Strange World of Planet X, released in 1958 after his death.
Goldie was married to Grace Wyndham Goldie, who worked as a television producer.
