About
Wright Lorimer, born Walter Myron Smith on March 10, 1874, in Massachusetts, was an American stage actor and playwright who performed and wrote for Broadway under the name Wright Lorimer. He was also known by the name Walter M. S. Lowell.
Lorimer is best remembered as the author and star of The Shepherd King, a religious play he co-wrote with Arnold Reeves. The production opened on Broadway in 1904, with Lorimer himself taking on the role of David. The play became one of his most significant professional achievements and remained closely associated with his name throughout his career and beyond.
His Broadway activity spanned the years 1904 to 1905. Following his death, The Shepherd King continued to attract attention: in 1923, Fox Film Corporation adapted the work into a film production that was shot across multiple countries. The film was released in direct competition with Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments.
Lorimer died on December 22, 1911, by suicide. His death was attributed to despair over a contractual dispute and disagreements regarding the proceeds from The Shepherd King with producer William A. Brady.
