About
Sherwin David Harris, known professionally as Wood Harris, was born on October 17, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois, to Mattie, a seamstress, and John Henry Harris, a bus driver. The nickname "Wood" was given to him by neighborhood friends who found "Sherwin" difficult to pronounce. He is the younger brother of actor Steve Harris. Harris developed an interest in the arts at age twelve, focusing on drawing and painting, and played basketball at St. Joseph's School, the subject of the documentary Hoop Dreams. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts from Northern Illinois University, where he also played on the basketball team, and later received a Master of Fine Arts from New York University. During his time at NYU, Harris was briefly dismissed for tardiness before his classmates petitioned successfully for his reinstatement.
While still enrolled at Northern Illinois University, Harris appeared in the basketball drama Above the Rim (1994), directed by Jeff Pollack and featuring Duane Martin and Tupac Shakur, in the role of Motaw. He also participated in numerous off-Broadway theatrical productions during that period. His film work continued with two notable roles in 2000: he portrayed high school football player Julius Campbell in the Walt Disney Pictures film Remember the Titans and played rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix in the Showtime television film Hendrix. His performance in Remember the Titans earned him an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture and a Blockbuster Movie Award nomination for Favorite Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.
Harris gained widespread recognition beginning in 2002 through two distinct projects. He starred as cocaine dealer Ace, a character based on real-life figure Azie Faison, in the Dame Dash-produced crime film Paid in Full. That same year, he began portraying drug kingpin Avon Barksdale, a character loosely based on Nathan Barksdale, in the HBO crime drama The Wire, a role he continued through 2008. The Wire established Harris as one of the more prominent dramatic actors of his generation on American television.
His film credits expanded considerably in the years that followed. He appeared in the dark comedy Next Day Air in 2009, the science fiction film Dredd in 2012, and the Marvel Studios superhero film Ant-Man in 2015. That same year he played Tony "Little Duke" Evers in the sports drama Creed, reuniting with his Wire castmate Michael B. Jordan, and reprised the role in Creed II (2018) and Creed III (2023). Additional film work includes the science fiction film Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and the 2025 film One Battle After Another, in which he portrayed a character named Laredo. In 2012, Harris also narrated the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary film Benji.
On television, Harris took on recurring roles across multiple series. He starred as Barry Fouray in the VH1 miniseries The Breaks, which ran from 2016 to 2017, and portrayed Brooke Payne in the BET miniseries The New Edition Story in 2017. He joined the Fox series Empire during its fifth and sixth seasons as Damon Cross, and appeared as the drug lord known as "Pat" in the Starz series BMF from 2021 to 2025.
In 2012, Harris made his Broadway debut in the revival of Tennessee Williams's drama A Streetcar Named Desire, playing the role of Harold "Mitch" Mitchell. The production also featured Blair Underwood, Nicole Ari Parker, and Daphne Rubin-Vega.
