Winifred Bryson

Winifred Bryson, born Winifred Brison on December 20, 1892, in Los Angeles, California, was an American actress who worked across stage and silent film. She died on August 20, 1987, and was interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.

Bryson began her performing career around 1913, with a newspaper account from February 1914 noting she had already been on the stage for approximately a year. Her early work encompassed musical comedy as well as dramatic productions, including the drama Regeneration alongside Bert Lytell. She also spent several months as the ingenue in a touring company led by May Robson. By 1916, she had taken on the role of leading lady with the Baker Stock Company in Portland, Oregon.

Her Broadway career brought her to New York in 1917, when she portrayed the character Muriel in Lombardi, Ltd. That production stands as her verified Broadway credit.

Bryson made her first film appearance in Peer Gynt in 1915, though her more substantial transition to motion pictures came with A Heart to Let in 1921. Over the course of her screen career she appeared in 19 films, with her final role coming in Adoration in 1928. The arrival of sound films brought her career to a close.

In her personal life, Bryson married actor Warner Baxter in 1918. That marriage lasted until Baxter's death in 1951. She subsequently married Ferdinand H. Manger, remaining with him until her own death.
