About
Willis Palmer Sweatnam, Sr. (1854–1930) was an American actor and minstrel show performer whose stage career spanned Broadway and the broader theatrical world of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, in 1854, Sweatnam built a career that encompassed both minstrel performance and legitimate stage work, appearing on Broadway from 1898 through 1917.
A pivotal moment in Sweatnam's career came in 1903, when playwright George Ade wrote a blackface role specifically for him in The County Chairman, a gesture made at a time when Sweatnam was experiencing financial hardship. The role proved transformative, and Sweatnam emerged as one of the production's standout performers.
His Broadway credits included the musical productions The Summer Widowers and George Washington, Jr., as well as the plays Bosom Friends, Back Home, and Excuse Me, among other productions. Sweatnam had a son, Willis Palmer Sweatnam, Jr., born in 1887.
Sweatnam died on November 25, 1930, at the Lambs Club.
