About

William Winter Jefferson (April 6, 1876 – February 11, 1946) was an American actor who worked across stage and silent film. Born in London to Sarah and Joseph Jefferson, the latter himself an actor, Jefferson initially pursued a different path, traveling to Germany to study medicine before ultimately choosing to follow his father into the acting profession. He was elected to The Lambs in 1896.

Jefferson maintained an active Broadway presence from 1905 to 1920, appearing in a range of productions spanning both musical and dramatic forms. His stage credits included the musical Three Showers, the play He Walked in Her Sleep, A Fool of Fortune, The Senator Keeps House, and Welcome to Our City, among other productions.

Alongside his theatrical work, Jefferson built a parallel career in silent film. He starred in the 1913 picture Wanted by the Police, a role that earned him favorable notices. He also appeared as one of the leads in the Keystone comedy Bright Lights. His film appearances across the 1910s included Camille (1915), He Did and He Didn't (1916), The Habit of Happiness (1916), The Stronger Love (1916), The Right Direction (1916), The Other Man (1916), His Wife's Mistakes (1916), Her Own People (1917), Out of the Wreck (1917), and Marrying Money.

In his personal life, Jefferson was married twice to actresses — first to Christie MacDonald and subsequently to Vivian Martin in 1913. Following his retirement from acting, he relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1928, where he married a woman named Mary in 1936. He died in Honolulu on February 11, 1946.
