About

William Lanteau, born William Lanctot on November 12, 1922, in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, was an American character actor and Broadway performer whose career spanned stage, film, and television. He died on November 3, 1993, at age 70, from complications following heart surgery.

During World War II, Lanteau served in the Army. He subsequently built a stage career that brought him to Broadway between 1949 and 1956, where he appeared in productions including the play What Every Woman Knows, the comedy At War With the Army, the musical Li'l Abner, and The Matchmaker. He also contributed to the revue Vintage '60 and worked as a book writer in addition to performing.

Lanteau's television career began in 1954 with an appearance on Goodyear Television Playhouse, and over the following decades he accumulated credits in more than 80 television programs. These included The Donna Reed Show, The Andy Griffith Show, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Here's Lucy, Wonder Woman, The Twilight Zone, Dr. Kildare, Perry Mason, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Waltons, CHiPs, Trapper John M.D., Diff'rent Strokes, Hart to Hart, Cagney and Lacey, Cheers, Murder She Wrote, The Wonder Years, and Coach, among others. He appeared in the first season of Barnaby Jones in the episode titled "To Denise, with Love and Murder," which aired on April 22, 1973. Two of his most recognized television roles were Charlie the mail carrier in On Golden Pond and Mayor Chester Wanamaker in Newhart.

His film work included the 1959 movie adaptation of Li'l Abner, The Honeymoon Machine in 1961, Sex and the Single Girl in 1964, Hotel in 1967, From Noon till Three in 1976, On Golden Pond in 1981, Cold Steel in 1987, and Shadow of a Doubt in 1991.
