About
William J. Scanlan (February 14, 1856 – February 18, 1898) was an American actor and composer who worked in musical theater. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, to parents of Irish ancestry, Scanlan built a career on the stage that brought him to Broadway and beyond.
His Broadway work included an appearance in 1882 in the comedy Friend and Foe. He also performed in the musical show Mavourneen, which reached its 100th performance on December 24, 1891.
Following the completion of that milestone performance, Scanlan became violently ill. On January 7, 1892, he was admitted to Bloomingdale Insane Asylum in White Plains, New York, where he remained until his death on February 18, 1898, four days after his forty-second birthday.
