About
William Haade (March 2, 1903 – November 15, 1966) was an American actor born in New York City who worked in both Broadway theater and film. He appeared in more than 250 films between 1937 and 1957 and died in Los Angeles, California.
Haade was born and raised in Manhattan, one of four children of Bernard Francis Haade and Annie Kelly. One of his siblings died in infancy in 1908, and his father died the following year. His mother subsequently married William Bittner, and Haade gained four half-siblings through that union. Before entering the entertainment industry, he worked as a construction boss.
His transition into acting came through an unconventional path. A technical advisor to director and designer Norman Bel Geddes recommended Haade to Bel Geddes, who was looking for a new face to fill the lead role in an upcoming production. That recommendation led to Haade's Broadway debut in Iron Men in 1936.
His stage work gave way to a prolific film career beginning in 1937. Among his early screen appearances was Kid Galahad (1937), in which he played Chuck McGraw. He went on to take roles in major productions including Union Pacific (1939) as Dusky Clayton, The Grapes of Wrath (1940) as a deputy, Sergeant York (1941), and Reap the Wild Wind (1942). He also appeared in Hangmen Also Die! (1943) and the serial Gang Busters (1942), in which he played Mike Taboni. His roles ranged from leads and supporting parts to uncredited appearances, frequently portraying laborers, law enforcement officers, soldiers, and villains across westerns, crime films, and dramas.
Haade was married to Anna R. Sincere, and the couple had two sons, William Joseph and Edward John Haade. He died on November 15, 1966.
