About

William E. Fountaine (August 15, 1897 – December 6, 1945) was an American actor who worked in both film and on Broadway during the early decades of the twentieth century.

Fountaine established himself in film through a series of productions in the early 1920s, several of which were made under the direction of pioneering filmmaker Oscar Micheaux. His screen credits from this period include Uncle Jasper's Will (1922), The Virgin of Seminole (1922), and The Dungeon (1922), in which he appeared as Stephen Cameron, followed by Deceit in 1923.

Later in the decade, Fountaine took on a leading role in the 1929 musical film Hallelujah, playing the character Hot Shot. The production was notably well received. During the filming of Hallelujah, Fountaine objected to dialogue he considered bigoted, reportedly telling those involved that delivering the lines as written would make it impossible for him to return to Harlem.

In 1930, Fountaine brought his career to the Broadway stage, appearing in the production Buddies.
