About
William B. Mack, born William B. McGillicuddy on April 8, 1872, in Bay City, Michigan, was an American stage and film actor whose Broadway career spanned from 1903 to 1930. He attended the University of Michigan and was a longtime member of The Lambs, a theatrical society.
Mack launched his theatrical career in traveling productions, working alongside companies led by actors including Clay Clement and Walker Whiteside. During this period he appeared in productions such as The Orphan of Geneva, The New Dominion, and A Southern Gentleman. In 1902 he joined the company of Minnie Maddern Fiske, through which he began performing in Broadway productions. His association with Fiske's company came to an abrupt end in December 1906, when he departed to take a role in Clyde Fitch's The Truth. His Broadway credits included Hedda Gabler, Within the Law, House Afire, Scarlet Sister Mary, Damn Your Honor, At the Gate of the Kingdom, and Revelry, among other productions.
Mack expanded into silent film work beginning in 1919 with an appearance in Virtuous Men. Subsequent film roles included Missing Millions in 1922 and Backbone in 1923. His final screen appearances came in 1926 with The American Venus and The Song and Dance Man. Mack died on September 13, 1955, at the Percy Williams Home for retired actors.
