About

William Albert Grew (August 26, 1885 – October 26, 1967) was an American actor, sketch-writer, composer, book writer, and revue playwright whose Broadway career spanned from the mid-1920s into the early 1930s. Over the course of that period, he wrote, directed, and performed in nine Broadway productions.

Before establishing himself on Broadway, Grew and his wife, actress Gwendolyn Pates, operated a stock company known as the Grew-Pates Players. The company performed across the United States and Canada from 1914 to 1920.

Grew's Broadway work encompassed a range of formats, including plays, musicals, and revues. Among his credits was the musical Florida Girl and the revue Earl Carroll's Vanities from 1925. His play The Sap, which dates to 1924, was adapted for film on two separate occasions. The Mating Season opened on July 18, 1927, at the Selwyn Theatre, and Nice Women ran at the Longacre Theatre in 1929. That same year, My Girl Friday played at the Theatre Republic. Jerry-for-Short was an additional play among his Broadway credits. She Lived Next to the Firehouse, a 1931 production co-written with Harry Delf, rounded out his known Broadway work.
