About
Willard Mack, born Charles Willard McLaughlin on September 18, 1873, in Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada, was a Canadian-American actor, director, and playwright whose Broadway career spanned from 1914 to 1928. His family relocated to Brooklyn, New York when he was young, and later settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he completed high school. While his parents eventually returned to Canada, Mack went on to study at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where student theatrical productions drew his early involvement. He adopted the stage name Willard Mack and spent several years after graduation taking minor acting roles and performing Shakespearean repertoire before turning his focus primarily to writing.
Mack's playwriting career began to gain traction with his second script, a work about the North-West Mounted Police titled In Wyoming, which achieved commercial success and later served as the basis for the film Nanette of the Wilds. Several of his subsequent plays, including Tiger Rose and The Scarlet Fox, were set in northern Alberta, reflecting his enduring connection to Canada, a country he returned to frequently throughout his life. In 1914 he made his Broadway acting debut in a play of his own authorship, launching a fourteen-year association with the New York stage during which he wrote twenty-two Broadway productions, acted in ten of them, and produced four. His Broadway credits include Broadway and Buttermilk, The Common Sin, The Big Chance, The Dove, and Canary Dutch, among others. The Dove, produced in 1925, was based on a story by Gerald Beaumont, and The Noose followed in 1926. His 1928 production A Free Soul was drawn from a novel by Adela Rogers St. Johns.
During his Broadway years, Mack operated a stock company alongside actress Maude Leone, who was also one of his four wives. His other marriages were to actresses Marjorie Rambeau, Pauline Frederick, and Beatrice Banyard. In the mid-1920s, Mack encountered an aspiring stage actress named Ruby Stevens, whom he had hired as a chorus girl for one of his productions. He coached her acting, rewrote portions of the play to expand her role, and persuaded her to adopt the stage name Barbara Stanwyck.
Concurrent with his Broadway work, Mack built a substantial career in motion pictures. Between 1916 and 1933 he contributed to the writing of more than seventy film scripts, and he performed in fifteen films while directing four. He began in silent film and transitioned to sound with the 1929 production Voice of the City, in which he served simultaneously as actor, director, and co-writer. He subsequently directed What Price Innocence? in 1933 and Broadway to Hollywood, a backstage musical tracing the fortunes of a vaudeville family across nearly five decades. A number of his stage works were adapted for the screen multiple times, among them Kick In, Tiger Rose, The Dove, The Noose, and A Free Soul. Initially based on the East Coast, Mack eventually relocated to Los Angeles. His writing career generated considerable wealth. He died of heart disease on November 18, 1934, at his home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California.
