Born in San Francisco, California, Louis came to acting relatively late, having operated an art studio before pursuing performance at the age of 20.
Louis spent approximately four years working in theater before transitioning to film, making his first screen appearance in 1911. His Broadway career ran from 1905 to 1915 and included roles in several musicals. Among his stage credits were Hands Up, Her Little Highness, My Best Girl, and How Baxter Butted In.
