McCormack graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.

McCormack made his Broadway appearance in 1996 at the Criterion Center Stage Right, performing as a member of the ensemble in a Roundabout Theatre Company revival of Tennessee Williams's Summer and Smoke. His stage work also extends to Off-Broadway, where he appeared in Chinese Friends and earned a Lucille Lortel Award for his performance in the one-act play The Long Christmas Ride Home in 2003.

On television, McCormack is recognized for his recurring role as Jason La Penna on The Sopranos from 1999 to 2001, as well as appearances on Brothers and Sisters from 2008 to 2009. He also played a recurring FBI agent on In Plain Sight from 2008 to 2012, a series that starred his sister Mary. He and Rashida Jones also developed the story for Toy Story 4, though both withdrew from the project in November 2017 and ultimately received story by credit on the 2019 film. McCormack's short film If Anything Happens I Love You, released in 2020, brought him the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. As of 2018, he is engaged to actress Emily Arlook.
