About

Whitney Bourne (May 6, 1914 – December 24, 1988) was an American actress who worked in both stage and film during the 1930s. The granddaughter of businessman Frederick Gilbert Bourne, she was born to Mr. and Mrs. George G. Bourne.

Bourne's theatrical career began on Broadway, where her first work was as an understudy in Eight Bells. Between 1932 and 1936, she appeared in four additional Broadway productions. In Firebird (1932), she played Ann, and in John Brown (1934), she portrayed Annie Brown. Her final two Broadway appearances came in 1936, when she took the role of Alice Whitridge in O Evening Star and appeared as a party guest in Case of Clyde Griffiths.

Her screen career launched with a leading role in Flight from Glory (1937), and on August 15 of that year she joined fellow cast members in re-enacting scenes from the film on the radio program The Magic Key of RCA. Bourne went on to appear in a number of B films throughout the late 1930s, including Double Danger, Living on Love, Blind Alibi, and The Mad Miss Manton. She also appeared in the British musical Head over Heels (1937), among other productions such as Crime Without Passion (1934), Once in a Blue Moon (1935), and Beauty for the Asking (1939). During World War II, Bourne served as an American Red Cross clubmobiler.

Bourne married Stanton Griffis on July 19, 1939, in Locust Valley, Long Island; the marriage ended in divorce on October 23, 1940, after which she resumed her maiden name. On July 3, 1946, she married Arthur Osgood Choate Jr. in Locust Valley, and the couple had one son before their marriage ended in 1949. Her third marriage, to stockbroker Roy F. Atwood, took place on February 4, 1956, in North Conway, New Hampshire.
