About
Welland Lathrop (1905–1981) was a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and painter who became a prominent figure in the modern and avant-garde dance movement on the West Coast of the United States. Born in upstate New York, he pursued an early interest in the visual arts, training in costume and scenic design at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, New York.
In 1928, Lathrop relocated to San Francisco to continue his design studies under Rudolph Schaeffer. It was during this period that he began his formal dance training, studying with Ann Mundstock of the Laban School. He subsequently attended the Cornish School in Seattle, Washington, where he trained from 1930 to 1934. Later, he enrolled at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater, where from 1938 to 1941 he served as an assistant in dance composition to Louis Horst.
During this period, Lathrop performed with the Martha Graham Dance Company and appeared in several Broadway productions. His verified Broadway credits span 1943 to 1944 and include the musical One Touch of Venus and On the Town.
