About
Warburton Gamble, born Evelyn Charles Warburton Gamble on 16 December 1882 in London, England, was a British stage and film actor whose career spanned several decades across both sides of the Atlantic. He died on 27 August 1945 in London. He was married to English actress Gillian Scaife.
Gamble began his professional stage career as early as 1905 and made his Broadway debut that same year in Love and the Man. His Broadway work continued through 1930, encompassing productions including Milestones, in which he appeared alongside Auriol Lee, Strange Interlude, Magda, The Wild Duck, and Tonight or Never, the last of his Broadway appearances. He also worked with the Theater Guild Repertory Company during a season in San Francisco.
His screen career began with The Unforseen in 1917, and he went on to work in Hollywood during both the silent and early sound eras. Among his notable film roles was that of Doctor Watson in the 1933 Sherlock Holmes adaptation A Study in Scarlet. His final two films were made at Ealing Studios.
