About

Walter Kingsford, born Walter Pearce on 20 September 1881 in Redhill, Surrey, England, was a stage, film, and television actor whose career spanned several decades across both sides of the Atlantic. He died on 7 February 1958 in Hollywood, California, at the age of 76.

Kingsford launched his acting career on the London stage before establishing a substantial presence in American theater. His Broadway career extended from 1912 to 1944, encompassing productions that included The Tragedy of Nan, Madame Sand, Port O' London, Hamlet, and All Soul's Eve. His first Broadway appearance came in the 1912 American premiere of George Bernard Shaw's Fanny's First Play, and his final Broadway credit was the 1944 production Song of Norway. In the early 1920s, he was an active member of the Henry Jewett Players.

After his years in theater, Kingsford relocated to Hollywood, where he built a prolific career in supporting film roles. He became closely associated with characters representing institutional authority, including noblemen, heads of state, physicians, police inspectors, and lawyers. He is perhaps best remembered for his recurring portrayal of Dr. P. Walter Carew, the imperious hospital administrator in the Dr. Kildare and Dr. Gillespie film series. His screen work was followed by numerous television appearances throughout the 1950s, among them TV Reader's Digest, Command Performance, and Science Fiction Theatre.

Kingsford was married to actress Winifred Hanley, and the couple had one son, Guy Kingsford. He died of a heart attack in Hollywood in 1958, and his ashes were scattered at Grand View Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
