About

Walter Eugene Perkins (1859–1925) was an American stage and film actor whose career spanned telegraph offices, Broadway stages, and silent film sets across several decades. Born in Biddeford, Maine, to Jotham and Ruth (Andrews) Perkins, he was one of four children raised in a household where his father operated a boot and shoe shop. His early years in Biddeford included graduating from Biddeford High School in 1876, founding an amateur newspaper called "The Snow Flake" at age 14, assembling a collection of more than 130 newspapers from 25 states and Canada, and studying telegraphy during his school years. He was also an active participant in productions organized by the Universalist Society.

Perkins began his working life as a telegraph operator at the Eastern Division station of the Boston and Maine Railroad in Biddeford before relocating to Boston to pursue a career on the stage. He subsequently performed in small parts in various comedies and was eventually hired by Broadway producer Charles Frohman. His first significant role came at age 37, when playwright Henry A. Du Souchet wrote a part specifically for him in the farce My Friend from India. The production opened on October 6, 1896, at the Bijou Theatre on Broadway, with Perkins in the starring role of "A. Keene Shaver." The show was a success and established Perkins as a notable comedic presence on the Broadway stage.

His professional relationship with Du Souchet continued productively, yielding additional productions including The Man from Mexico, Toppy, and Who Goes There?, the last of which is regarded as among Perkins' biggest stage successes. His Broadway credits, active from 1896 to 1906, also included the musical My Lady's Maid. Beyond his work with Du Souchet, Perkins appeared in productions such as All the Comforts of Home, Charley's Aunt, The Lost Paradise, Held by the Enemy, and Pa Potter. He is reported to have performed in every city and town of consequence in every state of the Union, with extended runs in major cities accounting for much of his time.

A notable episode in his career occurred when he was performing at the Majestic Theatre in San Francisco at the time of the 1906 earthquake and fire. Perkins was uninjured and subsequently provided accounts of the experience to newspapers in Biddeford.

Beginning in 1914, Perkins transitioned into film, appearing in sixteen screen productions through 1922, some of which were adaptations of his stage work. His film credits include My Friend from India (1914), Who Goes There? (1914), and Paying His Debt (1918). He continued performing in productions across the United States and Canada until his death.

Perkins died in Brooklyn, New York, on June 3, 1925, following a short illness caused by food poisoning. He never married. His New York funeral was held at the Frank E. Campbell funeral chapel on Madison Avenue, and his remains were subsequently returned to Biddeford, where a local funeral took place at the family home on Chadwick Place. He was buried at the family plot in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, Maine.
