Walter J. Gorney was born on April 12, 1912, in Austria, and went on to build a career as an actor in both film and theater in the United States. He died in New York City on March 5, 2004, at the age of 91.

Gorney appeared on Broadway between 1971 and 1975, with credits that included the play Trelawny of the "Wells" and Scratch. His stage work placed him in New York during a period that overlapped with his growing presence in film.

In film, Gorney became widely recognized for portraying "Crazy" Ralph in the slasher films Friday the 13th, released in 1980, and Friday the 13th Part 2, released in 1981. He reprised his connection to the franchise in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood in 1988, this time serving as the film's narrator. The character of Ralph was parodied by Robert Donner in the 1983 film Hysterical. Beyond the Friday the 13th series, Gorney's film appearances included Heavy Traffic in 1973, King Kong in 1976, and Day of the Animals in 1977.
