About
Wallis Hensman Clark (2 March 1882 – 14 February 1961) was an English stage and film actor born in Bolton, Lancashire, the son of William Wallis Clark (1854–1930), an engineer. Before pursuing a career in acting, Clark worked as an engineer himself. He made his stage debut in Margate, Kent, in 1908, and subsequently relocated to the United States, where he performed in numerous productions at venues including the Little Theatre in Philadelphia.
Clark's Broadway career spanned more than three decades, from 1914 to 1947. Among his stage credits were Peter Ibbetson, Mr. Samuel, Napi, Little A, and The Exile, along with other productions during that period.
Clark transitioned to film work in 1932, going on to appear in supporting roles across 136 films between 1931 and 1954. Five of the productions in which he appeared went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture: It Happened One Night (1934), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), The Great Ziegfeld (1936), You Can't Take It with You (1938), and Gone with the Wind (1939). In four of those five films Clark received no screen credit. The exception was Mutiny on the Bounty, in which he was credited for his portrayal of Morrison.
