About

W. G. Fay was an Irish theatrical figure and Broadway performer whose career spanned both the development of Irish national theatre and the New York stage. Together with his brother Frank, William founded the Irish National Dramatic Company in 1902, an organization that served as a direct precursor to Dublin's Abbey Theatre. Before the brothers joined forces, William had spent the 1890s working with a touring company across Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, while Frank pursued amateur dramatics in Dublin. Upon William's return, the two began mounting productions in halls throughout the city before formally establishing their company, which was dedicated to cultivating Irish acting talent.

The Irish National Dramatic Company's inaugural production, Cathleen Ni Houlihan, was staged on 2 April 1902. The following year, in March 1903, the company presented the first production of The Hour-Glass. Among those who participated in the company's work were Máire Nic Shiubhlaigh, Helen Laird, Máire T. Quinn, Brian Callender, Charles Caulfield, James H. Cousins, and Dudley Digges. The company secured rooms at 34 Lower Camden Street, converting the space into a small theatre. In 1903, the playwrights and the majority of the actors moved forward to establish the Irish National Theatre Society, which held its registered offices on Camden Street and subsequently evolved into the Abbey Theatre.

Fay brought his theatrical experience to Broadway, where he performed between 1908 and 1913. His New York stage credits included the play General John Regan, The Rising of the Moon, and A Pot of Broth.
