About

Volga Margaret Hayworth was born on August 8, 1897, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Allynn Duran Hayworth and Margaret O'Hare. Her younger brother was actor Vinton Hayworth. She would go on to work as a dancer and vaudevillian, becoming a recognized presence on the Broadway stage during the late 1910s and early 1920s.

Hayworth's Broadway career spanned from 1916 to 1923 and included appearances in the musical Follow Me and the 1923 revue The Greenwich Village Follies. She also appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies. It was in 1916 that she met Eduardo Cansino, a Spanish-born dancer, and the two married in 1917. Together they formed a vaudeville act known as The Dancing Cansinos and had three children.

Hayworth is also remembered as the mother of actress Rita Hayworth, born Margarita Carmen Cansino on October 17, 1918. Rita Hayworth adopted her mother's maiden name as her professional surname.

Volga Hayworth Cansino died on January 25, 1945, in Santa Monica, California, from peritonitis caused by a ruptured appendix. She was 47 years old.
