About
Vivian Grace Holt (May 10, 1885 – July 7, 1945) was an American coloratura soprano who built a career spanning vaudeville, Broadway, recordings, and radio. Born in Peru, Indiana, to Clarence Edwin Holt and Adele Durand Holt, she came from a theatrical family — her father was an actor and her mother was an actress — and appeared on stage from early childhood. Her parents divorced in 1895, and her father was later convicted of bigamy. Holt trained as a singer under Lazar Samoiloff and Francis Stuart. Musical Courier noted in 1916 that she exemplified Samoiloff's bel canto method, citing her breath control, dynamic range, trills, staccatos, and tone attack. She was also known professionally as Vivienne Holt and, between 1913 and 1915, as Vivian Holt-Ruben.
Holt's professional visibility grew steadily in the 1910s. She appeared at a concert held at Ella Backus-Behr's New York City studio in 1911, and she and pianist and composer Lillian Rosedale Goodman performed together on vaudeville and lyceum circuits throughout that decade. The two were frequent collaborators, and Holt made dozens of recordings between 1913 and 1929, primarily for the Victor label, many of which were duets with Rosedale. Their Broadway work together included Hello, Alexander in 1919, which also featured Sophie Tucker, and Red Pepper in 1922. Holt introduced Rosedale to Chicago lawyer Mark O. Goodman, a connection that led to Rosedale's marriage in 1921 and brought their professional partnership to a close.
Following the end of her collaboration with Rosedale, Holt made recordings and toured with Myrtle Leonard in 1923 and 1924, and performed with tenor Robert Roberts in 1926. She and Rosedale reunited for a radio concert in 1931. In her later years, Holt worked as an actress in radio programs. Her Broadway career continued into the following decade, and she appeared in the 1939 production Sing for Your Supper. In her personal life, Holt was briefly married and had a daughter, Eleanor Ruben. She died of a heart attack in New York City on July 7, 1945, at the age of 60.
