About
Virginia True Boardman, born Margaret Shields on May 23, 1889, in Fort Davis, Texas, was an American actress whose career spanned silent film, vaudeville, stock theater, and Broadway. She died on June 10, 1971, in Hollywood, California, at the age of 82, following a heart attack.
Boardman began her performing career in 1908 with the Streeter-Bryan company and went on to appear in 52 films between 1911 and 1936. Her screen work was concentrated in the silent era, and like a number of her contemporaries, she did not successfully carry her career into the sound period, with her film work effectively concluding by the mid-1930s.
On January 16, 1909, she married actor True Boardman, whose surname she retained professionally. The two worked alongside each other in vaudeville and stock theater companies until his death in 1918. Together they had one child, True Eames Boardman, who pursued a brief acting career before establishing a long career as a writer for radio, film, and television. True Eames Boardman was also the grandfather of actress Lisa Gerritsen.
In 1929, Boardman brought her stage experience to Broadway, appearing in Carnival!, adding a theatrical credit to a career that had already taken her across multiple performance disciplines.
