About
Virginia Tracy (1874–March 4, 1946) was an American stage actress, novelist, screenwriter, and adventurer born in New York, New York. She was the daughter of Victorian actress Helen Tracy (1850–1924) and Shakespearean actor John McCullough, and her career spanned writing, film, and the stage across several decades.
Tracy's work in journalism centered on the New York Tribune, where she contributed regularly. At the age of 20, in 1894, she produced one of her earliest professional pieces after joining a cross-country train journey led by actor Maurice Barrymore and a caravan of performers accompanying him. Her literary output included the books Merely Players: The Stories of Stage Life (1909), Persons Unknown (1914), Starring Dulcy Jayne (1927), Moment After (1930), and The Personal Appearance of a Lioness (1937).
Her work in film extended to large-scale productions for the Fox Film Corporation during the 1920s. Her screenwriting credits include The Queen of Sheba (1921), Nero (1922), The Shepherd King (1923), and The Net (1924).
Tracy's Broadway career stretched from 1901 to 1938. Her stage credits included Up York State (1901), Bulls, Bears and Asses (1932), Wild Waves (1932), Lone Valley (1933), the play And Be My Love (1934), the play Jig Saw (1934), the play Post Road (1934), the comedy Sweet Mystery of Life (1935), and Escape This Night (1938).
Tracy died in New York City on March 4, 1946. She had apparently never married.
