Virginia Myers

Virginia Myers (October 21, 1906 – January 4, 1975) was an American dancer and Broadway performer born in New York City. Her parents were the New York-based artists Jerome Myers and Ethel Myers.

Myers first appeared before a New York audience at the age of four, performing a solo improvisational dance to the "Morning Mood" section of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite as a four-minute prologue to a charity benefit evening at the Plaza Hotel on April 4, 1911. The following year, the Edison Film Company cast her, then five years old, as the subject of their 1000th film production. That film, Dream Dances of Virginia Myers (1912), ran approximately twenty minutes and was devoted entirely to her original creative dancing, receiving distribution across the United States and abroad.

Over the eleven years that followed, Myers gave fifteen dance performances at various New York theaters, each filling a full afternoon or evening program with her own original interpretations of musical works. She developed this body of work without formal dance training, professional choreography, or outside staging. In April 1923, she made her public debut at Carnegie Hall at the age of sixteen, where the New York Times noted that she held her audience's attention through versatile interpretations across an entire evening program.

Myers went on to appear on Broadway in 1927 in the musical Oh, Ernest!, extending a performance career that had begun in New York more than fifteen years earlier.
