About
Virginia Harned, born Virginia Hicks on May 29, 1868, in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American stage actress whose career on Broadway spanned more than four decades, from 1894 to 1936. She died on April 29, 1946.
Harned is most closely associated with the title role in the 1895 Broadway premiere of Trilby, a play adapted from George du Maurier's 1894 novel of the same name. The production had first opened in England earlier that year, with an English actress in the lead role, before Harned took on the character for American audiences. Among her other Broadway credits, she starred in Alice of Old Vincennes and The New Woman, and appeared in productions including Anna Karenina, The Sunken Bell, and Eyes.
Her personal life intersected with her professional world on more than one occasion. Her second husband was actor E. H. Sothern, who subsequently married actress Julia Marlowe. Her third husband was actor William Courtenay, with whom she shared the stage on several occasions. Courtenay's death in 1933 left Harned a widow.
