About
Virginia Hammond (August 20, 1893 – April 6, 1972) was an American actress whose career spanned both stage and film. Born in Staunton, Virginia, she was the daughter of a Confederate army major. Her Broadway career extended from 1907 to 1947, encompassing a wide range of theatrical productions.
Hammond made her Broadway debut in 1907 in John the Baptist. Over the following decades she accumulated an extensive list of stage credits, including Our American Cousin, The Famous Mrs. Fair, Tumble In, What's Your Husband Doing?, What the Doctor Ordered, Arsene Lupin, Desert Sands, The Arab, and The Man Who Came to Dinner. Her final Broadway appearance came in 1947 in Craig's Wife, in which she portrayed Mrs. Frazier.
Alongside her stage work, Hammond pursued a film career beginning in 1916 with the silent film Vultures of Society, in which she played Mrs. Upperwon. Her subsequent film appearances included Anybody's Woman, The Great Impersonation, The Virginia Judge, The Kiss, Charlie Chan's Courage, and Chandu the Magician. Her final screen credit was the 1936 production of Romeo and Juliet, in which she played Lady Montague.
Hammond was a close friend of actress Edna May Oliver. She died in April 1972 in Washington, D.C., at the age of 78, and was buried at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
