Virginia Downing was an American actress born on March 7, 1904, in Washington, D.C. She died on November 21, 1996, of a heart attack while traveling to a theater. Her husband was the actor John Leighton.
Downing graduated from Bryn Mawr College and worked as a translator of plays for Garson Kanin. Her Broadway career spanned from 1962 to 1986 and included productions such as Arsenic and Old Lace and A Gift of Time. Additional Broadway credits include Father Malachy's Miracle, Forward the Heart, Cradle Will Rock, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
Alongside her Broadway work, Downing maintained an extensive Off-Broadway career. Those credits include Juno and the Paycock, The Man with the Golden Arm, Palm Tree in a Rose Garden, Play with a Tiger, The Weives, The Idiot, Medea, Mrs. Warren's Profession, Mercy Street, Thunder Rock, Pygmalion, First Week in Bogota, Rimers of Eldritch, Les Blancs, Shadow of a Gunman, All the Way Home, Winter's Tale, Billy Liar, Shadow and Substance, Silent Catastrophe, Ernest in Love, Night Games, Frog in His Throat, and All That Fall. In 1990, she appeared in a production of Richard III that also starred Denzel Washington.
