About
Violet Heming (27 January 1895 – 4 July 1981) was an English stage and screen actress born in Leeds, Yorkshire, the daughter of Alfred Hemming, who appeared in silent films, and Mabel Allen. Her surname occasionally appeared in print as Hemming. She died in New York City and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Heming's stage career began in 1908, when she appeared as Carrie Crews in Fluffy Ruffles, launching a Broadway presence that would extend through 1952. In 1913 she appeared alongside George Arliss in the play Disraeli. By 1917 she had taken on the title role in the world premiere of Frederick J. Jackson's Losing Eloise, later retitled The Naughty Wife, which opened at Broadway's Harris Theatre. Among her many subsequent Broadway credits were Yes, My Darling Daughter, Dear Barbarians, And Be My Love, and Beverly Hills. In September 1926, she starred in the lead role of The Getaway, a play written by Charles King Van Riper, which was staged at Nixon's Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with Variety noting that much of the production's success was attributable to her performance.
Heming's screen work began in 1910 with a series of short films produced by the Thanhouser Film Company, including The Woman Hater, Tempest and Sunshine, and Lena Rivers. Her film credits across subsequent decades included The Running Fight (1915), The Danger Trail (1917), The Turn of the Wheel (1918), The Common Cause (1919), Everywoman (1919), The Cost (1920), When the Desert Calls (1922), and The Man Who Played God (1932). In September 1925, Variety reported that she was set to appear in a short filmed piece for the De Forest Phonofilm sound-on-film system, and she also made The Knife (1929), a short produced using Fox Movietone technology. In addition to her film work, Heming appeared in television productions across the decades.
