About

Vinie Daly (January 25, 1883 – December 1942) was an American actress, singer, and dancer whose career spanned from childhood performance through operatic work in the 1930s. Born Elvira Elizabeth Delahanty or Alvira Elizabeth Buckley in Boston, Massachusetts, she was known in private life as Elvira D. Kohl and performed at various points under the stage names Vera Vindall and Mme. Vinidali.

Daly came from a theatrical family. Her father, known professionally as "Billy Buckley," was a blackface comedian who died in 1894. Her mother, an actress and dancer who performed as "Lizzie Daly," gave Vinie her stage surname. The family was connected to a broader Daly theatrical circle that included Margaret Daly Vokes, Harry Vokes, Hap Ward, and Dan Daly. Daly began performing from early childhood and toured Europe with her mother before establishing herself on the American stage.

Her Broadway career ran from 1904 to 1907 and encompassed several productions. She appeared in A Pair of Pinks and The Southerners, both in 1904, followed by the musical Piff! Paff!! Pouf!!!, which ran from 1904 into 1905. She subsequently appeared in The Rollicking Girl in 1906 and the musical George Washington, Jr. in 1907.

In the 1910s, Daly shifted her focus toward opera, training in Europe and adopting the stage names she used during that period of her career. In 1924 she recorded "O sole mio," with pianist Leroy Shield providing accompaniment, and she continued working as a singer into the 1930s.

In her personal life, Daly married John Peter Kohl in 1909. Because Kohl was twenty years old and legally a minor at the time, the marriage was annulled by a court before the end of that year. The two remarried in 1913. Daly died in New Orleans, Louisiana, in December 1942 at the age of 59. A clippings file dedicated to her is held at the Museum of Performance & Design in San Francisco.
