About
Victoria Matlock is an American musical theatre actress born on February 3, 1978, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her first stage appearance came at age four, playing the title role in The Ugly Duckling. She continued performing through her childhood with the Junior Shakespeare Company and the University of Utah's Theatre for Youth program. A pivotal moment came at age thirteen, when her father brought her to New York City to see The Phantom of the Opera, an experience that directed her toward a career in musical theatre. Matlock later attended the University of Northern Colorado, where her stage roles included Lorraine in The Man Who Came to Dinner, Kate in The Taming of the Shrew, Patsy Cline in Always Patsy Cline, and Eva Perón in Evita.
After completing her degree, Matlock relocated to New York City. Among her early professional credits was TheatreWorks USA's production of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, in which she played Mrs. Primm. She subsequently appeared in regional and off-Broadway productions including Godspell as Joanne, The Sound of Music as Maria, and Baby Case as Studio Sister and The Secretary. She portrayed Grizzabella in Cats at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, New York, and took on the role of Emma Carew in Jekyll & Hyde in Concert. She also participated in the original production of Saving Aimee, written by Kathie Lee Gifford.
Matlock joined the national tour of The Full Monty as Susan, also understudying the roles of Pam and Vicki, and appeared on Broadway in the production between 2002 and 2010. She was part of the national tour of Evita, supervised by Hal Prince, playing Sister and Nurse, before the production transferred to Broadway. In March 2006, she joined the first North American tour of Wicked as standby for the lead role of Elphaba, covering the part for Julia Murney and later Shoshana Bean. On January 3, 2007, she assumed the role of Elphaba full-time, remaining in the production for ten months before departing on November 4, 2007. During that run she performed opposite Kendra Kassebaum and Christina DeCicco in the role of Glinda.
In June 2008, Matlock played Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Maine State Music Theatre, with the run extending from June 4 through June 21. She next appeared off-Broadway at the Westside Theatre as Cindy Lou in The Marvelous Wonderettes, leaving that production on June 7, 2009. That same summer she starred in a musical adaptation of The First Wives Club at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre, which ran from July 17 through August 30, 2009. Matlock also appeared in both the Broadway and off-Broadway productions of Million Dollar Quartet, playing the role of Dyanne.
