About
Victor Jacobi (October 22, 1883 – December 10, 1921) was a Hungarian-born composer who worked in operetta and musical theater, eventually bringing his career to Broadway. Born in Hungary, he trained at the Zeneakadémia, the Academy of Music in Budapest, where his fellow students included composers Imre Kálmán and Albert Szirmai.
Jacobi launched his composing career under the name Jakabfi Viktor on December 17, 1904, with the operetta A rátartós királykisasszony (The Haughty Princess). A series of Hungarian-language works followed over the next several years, among them Legvitézebb Huszár (The Brave Hussar) in 1905, A tengerszem tündére (The Nautical Fairy) in 1906, Tüskerózsa (Rambler Rose) in 1907, Van, de nincs (There Is, But There Isn't) in 1908, and Jánoska in 1909. His 1911 work Leányvásár was later adapted as The Marriage Market in 1913 and then as Szibill in 1914, the operetta that became his most celebrated composition. A planned London production of Szibill was cancelled due to the outbreak of World War I.
The disruption of the war brought Jacobi to the United States, where he established himself as a Broadway composer and book writer. His American credits include Apple Blossoms, a 1919 musical created in collaboration with Fritz Kreisler, as well as The Half Moon, Rambler Rose, The Marriage-not, and the play The Letter. His final work, The Love Letter, appeared in 1921.
During his time in New York City, Jacobi became seriously ill. He died there on December 10, 1921, at the age of 38, of acute lymphocytic leukemia.
