About
Veronica Redd is an American actress born on August 8, 1948, in Washington, D.C., whose career has spanned Broadway, television, and film. She is perhaps best known to television audiences for her portrayal of Mamie Johnson on the CBS daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless, and she holds a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance, received in 1974.
Redd's stage career preceded her television work, with a Broadway appearance in 1972 in Via Galactica. Her Drama Desk Award recognition followed two years later, in 1974.
Her television career began with a guest appearance on the CBS sitcom The Jeffersons, in which she played Edith "Edie" Stokes, described as George Jefferson's former Navy buddy who had transitioned, in a Season 4 episode titled "Once a Friend." Subsequent guest roles came on Good Times, Eight Is Enough, Lou Grant, Hill Street Blues, WKRP in Cincinnati, and Diff'rent Strokes. In 1982, Redd took on a starring role in the CBS miniseries The Blue and the Gray, a production set during the American Civil War, in which she played the character Hattie. She later appeared in the television films The Atlanta Child Murders in 1985 and The Women of Brewster Place in 1989.
Redd joined The Young and the Restless in 1990 as Mamie Johnson, becoming the second actress to play the role after Marguerite Ray. The character was the show's first contract African-American character. Redd held the role from 1990 to 1995, returned from 1999 to 2004, and reprised the part again in 2023 in connection with the series' 50th anniversary celebration.
Her film credits include Clean and Sober (1988), in which she played a head nurse in a detox unit, The Five Heartbeats (1991) as Mrs. Matthews, and Blue Hill Avenue (2001) in the role of Nana.
