About

Vera Olcott, born in 1893 in Philadelphia, was an American dancer and Broadway performer who built a career spanning vaudeville stages in New York City, the Broadway stage, and prominent venues across Europe in the early twentieth century. She later became known as Countess Vera Ivanova following her marriage to a Russian nobleman.

Olcott left home at sixteen and secured work as a chorus girl on Broadway, where she performed between 1912 and 1917. Her verified Broadway credits include the musicals Hokey-Pokey and Jack O'Lantern. Before establishing herself on Broadway, she had already attracted attention in New York vaudeville, performing the Salome dance at Huber's 14th Street Museum in Manhattan in 1908, where she wore an abbreviated tarletan skirt. She was among a number of women presenting Salome dances in vaudeville at the time, a group that included La Sylphe, Eva Tanguay, Lotta Faust, and Gertrude Hoffman. Olcott acknowledged drawing inspiration from newspaper and magazine images of Salome, though she stated she had not read the Bible and was unfamiliar with the story of Salome and Herod Antipas. She expressed concern that police would move to ban such performances, noting that some of her competitors' presentations lacked refinement, and worried the controversy would result in all versions of the dance being shut down.

Her career expanded significantly in Europe, where she became a highly paid figure on the French stage. A competition awarding silver slippers to the woman with the smallest and most beautiful feet in Paris resulted in Olcott's selection, and the recognition led directly to a contract that elevated her professional standing. She also received more than one hundred pairs of custom-made shoes as gifts. In 1922 she claimed a $100,000 prize for having the most beautiful legs in Paris and subsequently had them insured for the same amount. In March 1923 she appeared at the Palace Theatre in London alongside Harry Pilcer in Toutes les Femmes, wearing a feathered headdress with curling plumes. She was aboard the passenger ship President Harding when it docked in Hoboken, New Jersey, in August 1923, and in December of that year she sailed from New York City on the RMS Berengaria, bound for Cherbourg and Southampton.

Olcott introduced the Charleston to Berlin at the Theater des Westens in August 1926, and in 1927 she traveled from Paris to the French Riviera to perform her interpretation of the black bottom dance.

Her personal life intersected with European aristocracy when she secretly married Count Alexis Constantinovitch Zarnekau, a Russian nobleman and cousin of Czar Nicholas II. As his wife she was known as Vera Ivanova. She eventually returned to the United States, and Zarnekau subsequently divorced her. He had arranged for his remaining Slavic estates to pass to Olcott, but when he died in front of the Winter Palace, Bolshevik forces seized the land. A separate account reported that in September 1926, while in Berlin, Olcott was searching for Zarnekau based on a clue suggesting he had not died in battle. She had reportedly received a letter from abroad indicating he was still alive, and she traveled to Europe that year hoping to reunite with him and reestablish their place in Czarist circles, at a time when a royal restoration in Russia was still considered a possibility by some. Whether Zarnekau had survived was never verified.
