About
Vera Marsh, born Vera Merle Marsh on July 15, 1905, in Sacred Heart, Minnesota, was an American performer whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television. She was raised in Minneapolis, where she attended Madison and Clinton elementary schools and Central High School. Her parents were Marie Stensrud and Harry Theodore Marsh.
Marsh established herself on Broadway between 1923 and 1931, appearing in the revue George White's Scandals (1922) and the musicals East Wind, Free For All, and America's Sweetheart. She also appeared onstage alongside Al Jolson in The Wonder Bar and, in 1932, stepped into The Band Wagon opposite Fred Astaire following the departure of his sister Adele, who left the production to marry.
Her transition into film began with a series of short films in the 1930s. Her first starring feature role came in Nearly Naked (1933), opposite Eddie Foy Jr., a project that also marked her adoption of the stage name Marshe. Among her notable screen appearances are Way Out West (1930), Those Endearing Young Charms (1945), The Crimson Key (1947), and Tormented (1960).
During the 1950s and 1960s, Marshe shifted her focus to television work. Her final screen credit was a recurring presence on the television series Perry Mason, which ran from 1959 to 1966. Vera Marshe died on March 25, 1984, at the age of 78.
