About
Ursula Jeans, born Ursula Jean McMinn on 5 May 1906 in Simla, British India, was an English actress who worked across film, stage, and television throughout a career spanning five decades. The youngest of three siblings, she was raised and educated in London. Her brother Desmond Jeans pursued careers in both boxing and acting, while her elder sister Isabel also became an actress.
Jeans made her London stage debut in 1922 and went on to appear in Edward Knoblock's Grand Hotel at the Adelphi Theatre in 1931. She also joined the London cast of The Play's the Thing, a P. G. Wodehouse adaptation of Ferenc Molnár's The Play at the Castle, alongside Gerald du Maurier, Ralph Nairn, Henry Daniell, and Henry Forbes-Robertson. Her New York stage debut came in 1933, and she remained active on Broadway through 1953, with credits including Escapade and Late One Evening.
Her personal life was closely intertwined with the acting profession. Her first marriage, to actor Robin Irvine, lasted from 1931 until his death in 1933. In 1937 she married actor Roger Livesey, with whom she remained until her own death. The family connection between the two extended further, as Livesey's sister Maggie was already married to Jeans's brother Desmond. Jeans and Livesey appeared together in one film, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, in 1943, and shared the stage in Watch on the Rhine, Ever Since Paradise, and Uncertain Joy. During World War II, the two also entertained troops together through ENSA.
Following the war, Jeans continued to work steadily in theatre and television. In 1956 she played Mrs. Tarlton in one of the eight episodes of the BBC's H M Tennant's Globe Theatre, and between 1956 and 1958 she undertook a stage tour of Australia and New Zealand. Her television work extended into the late 1960s, with single appearances in Dixon of Dock Green in 1967 as Mrs. Regan, and in both Theatre 625 and The Root of All Evil? in 1968, playing Mother Denis and Ursula Benton respectively. She continued acting into the 1970s before her death from cancer on 21 April 1973, at the age of 66, approximately eighteen months after her diagnosis. She is commemorated alongside Roger Livesey on a memorial plaque at St Paul's Church, Covent Garden, known as the actors' church.
