About

Ursula Howells (17 September 1922 – 16 October 2005) was an English actress born in London. Her father was the composer Herbert Howells, who served as Director of Music at St Paul's Girls' School, where Howells received her education.

Her stage career began in 1939 with a production of John Drinkwater's Bird in Hand in Dundee. She relocated to Oxford in 1942, and three years later made her London debut at the Embassy Theatre in Swiss Cottage. In 1947, Howells appeared in the comedy Jane at the Aldwych Theatre, and continued working in the West End before making her Broadway debut. In 1951, she appeared on Broadway in the play Springtime for Henry. Following her time on Broadway, she went on to work in film and television.

After her father's death in 1983, Howells founded the Herbert Howells Society in 1987 and dedicated considerable effort to promoting his musical legacy. She provided financial support for recordings of his compositions and worked to encourage the publishing and wider promotion of his church music.

Howells died on 16 October 2005 at the age of 83.
