Tyra Ferrell is an American actress born in Houston, Texas, who built her career across stage, film, and television. After finishing high school, she relocated from Houston to New York and began working in theater, appearing on Broadway between 1981 and 1983. Her stage credits include Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, in which she performed as part of the Cotton Club chorus, and Dreamgirls. She also appeared in Ain't Misbehavin on Broadway. Ferrell made her screen debut in the 1981 comedy film So Fine and subsequently appeared in Lady Beware, School Daze, The Mighty Quinn, and The Exorcist III. Early television work included guest appearances on Hill Street Blues, The Twilight Zone, and Quantum Leap.

Her first significant television role came with the drama series The Bronx Zoo, in which she played Roberta during its 1987–88 run. She also held a recurring role on Square One Television and appeared on Thirtysomething between 1989 and 1990. In 1990, Ferrell joined the regular cast of the short-lived CBS sitcom City, starring opposite Valerie Harper as secretary Wanda Jenkins.

Ferrell gained wider recognition in 1991 through two prominent film roles. She portrayed matriarch Brenda Baker in Boyz n the Hood and played Orin Goode, the love interest of John Turturro's character, in Jungle Fever. Her performance in Boyz n the Hood earned her an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture. That same year, she was named one of twelve Promising New Actors of 1991 in John A. Willis' Screen World. In 1992, she starred alongside Wesley Snipes in White Men Can't Jump, playing his wife Rhonda, and took a supporting role as a janitor named Sonya in Equinox. She followed those credits with the role of beauty salon owner Jessie in Poetic Justice in 1993.

Also in 1993, Ferrell took on the leading role of prosecutor Cutter Dubuque in the Lifetime Television film Better Off Dead, appearing alongside Mare Winningham. The following year, she recurred as Dr. Sarah Langworthy during the first season of the NBC medical drama ER. From 1996 to 1997, she co-starred with Corbin Bernsen on the syndicated science fiction series The Cape, portraying Tamara St. James.

In 2000, Ferrell co-starred with Khandi Alexander in the HBO miniseries The Corner, and she later guest-starred on Soul Food, The Shield, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Her role in the 2005 ABC television film NTSB: The Crash of Flight 323 brought her a second NAACP Image Award nomination, this time in the category of Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Miniseries or Dramatic Special. After 2004, Ferrell stepped away from acting for approximately a decade before returning in Tasha Smith's directorial debut, Boxed In, in a leading role. In 2015, she joined the second season of Fox's Empire in a recurring capacity, playing attorney Roxanne Ford. Across her career, Ferrell has received two NAACP Image Award nominations in total.
